  • Did you known that Guifré el Pilós, Count of Barcelona, gave the order to build amilitary fortress in the middle of Catalonia in 886? Since then, the castle and collegiate church of Sant Vicenç de Cardona have dominated the county and the Salt Mountain.
  • For centuries, the castle was home to the powerful lords of Cardona, the “wealthy lords of the salt”, and during the War of the Spanish Succession it was a symbol of Catalan resistance to the Bourbon troops.
  • During your tour of the medieval castle, you’ll find out about the legend of theMinyona Tower and the outstanding collegiate church of Sant Vicenç, a jewel of Catalan Romanesque architecture. We’ll also explain why the fortress is known as the castle that has never been defeated by weapons.
  • The potassium salt mines in Cardona opened in 1926 and earned a reputation as some of the most important in the world until they closed in 1990. Today the old mines are a major cultural attraction where you can walk through the old galleries 86 metres below the ground.
